Join us as we watch perhaps the greatest comedy of all time: Sullivan’s Travels (1941) by Preston Sturges. Joel McCrea plays a director of Hollywood trifles who yearns to make a serious ode to the working class (called O Brother, Where Art Thou?), but lacks any firsthand experience of poverty. He decides to don the rags of a tramp and take to the road, where he meets a down-on-her-luck actress played by the iconic Veronica Lake. Hilarity ensues. But (like that other great comedy, Groundhog Day) Sullivan’s Travels is also a masterful spiritual allegory, paralleling the life of the Buddha and the gnostic “Hymn of the Pearl” while demonstrating the transcendent mystical power of cinema. Hot, fresh popcorn will be served!
