Currently there are TWO open positions at the Derby Neck Library:
Adult Services Assistant (Library Assistant II)
Derby Neck Library is seeking an energetic, creative, and highly motivated Adult Services Assistant to join its team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for developing and supporting engaging programs for adult patrons, collaborating with a dynamic team of librarians across departments, and providing excellent customer service. The library’s current adult programming focuses on a diverse range of topics, including history (local, global, culinary, etc.), true crime and mysteries, DIY/crafting, and film and media production. Derby Neck Library welcomes candidates who bring their own unique interests and perspectives to help meet the diverse needs of its vibrant community of learners, makers, and doers.
This position requires substantial patron interaction, including circulation desk coverage and readers’ advisory. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates with a demonstrated history of program and event development and promotion are strongly encouraged to apply. Must have experience with Microsoft Office, email, and basic computer usage. Experience with social media, newsletters, survey development, digital content creation, and graphic design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Illustrator) is highly desirable.
Hours: Part-time 20-24 hours per week, including early evenings and alternating Saturdays. If you cannot accommodate this schedule, please do not apply.
Compensation: Hourly rate of $17.50/hr; simple IRA retirement plan with employer-matching contributions up to 3% after 1 year employment; sick and personal PTO; and tuition reimbursement.
Teen Services Assistant (Library Assistant II)
Derby Neck Library is seeking a proactive, creative, and friendly Teen Services Assistant to join its team serving tweens as young as 10 and teens as old as 19.
The ideal candidate will be:

3) Compassionate of the challenges and needs of this population
The ideal candidate will have the ability to:
1) Develop engaging programs centered on teen culture, media, and life skills
2) Set boundaries and expectations for acceptable behavior in our busy Teen Space
3) Maintain composure while working with even the most challenging patrons
The library’s current teen population enjoys crafts, gaming, and socializing in our Teen Space. Derby Neck Library welcomes candidates who bring their own unique interests and perspectives to help support this population in learning critical social skills, meeting their technological needs, and preparing for the adult world.

Candidates with a demonstrated history of teen program facilitation and event development are strongly encouraged to apply. Must have experience with Microsoft Office, email, and basic computer usage. Experience with social media, gaming software and systems, or crafting (especially sewing) is highly desirable.

Essential Job Functions for either position:
1) Assists in the development and implementation of library programs, special events and Summer Reading
2) Promotes library events via the library’s website, flyers, social media, email, newsletter, print, TV, and radio marketing and coordinates event registrations when necessary
3) Assists in selecting and processing print and electronic materials
4) Straightens shelves and maintains book/material displays
5) Builds and maintains a strong working knowledge of the circulation system
6) Builds and maintains a strong working knowledge of current and emerging technologies
7) Works Circulation Desk shifts as scheduled, including responding to patron requests, answering phones, coordinating event and newsletter registrations, etc.
8) Deals tactfully and courteously with the public and upholds all confidentiality rights of patrons and patron records
9) Performs other duties as assigned
10) Displays professional conduct and appearance at all times while performing duties.
Qualifications and Requirements for either position:
1) High School Diploma or GED required
2) Prior experience working with adults
3) A passion for working with and serving the public
4) Ability to interact and assist with the public in a friendly and responsive manner
5) A strong background with print and non-print media
6) A familiarity with current and emerging technologies
7) Patience, tact, and excellent communication skills
8) Maintains a cooperative team spirit.
Preferred for either position:
1) Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to library services
2) Knowledge of library best practices and/or experience working in public libraries
3) Experience creating and conducting programs and/or fostering community engagement
4) Spanish language skills highly desirable.
Abilities for either position:
1) Ability to continuously bend, twist, stoop, reach and pull
2) Ability to keep composure in everyday, potentially stressful situations
3) Ability to meet a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends
4) Lifting of moderate to heavy weight material up to 30 lbs.

Volunteering is great way to get active in your community. At Derby Neck Library, we offer a host of options for volunteers who are looking to get valuable work experience, fulfill community service hours (school, church, court, etc.) or just want to get involved. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. No previous experience is required.
