Children’s Services Assistant (Library Assistant Level II, 1 position)
Derby Neck Library is seeking an energetic, creative, and friendly Children’s Services Assistant to join its team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for developing and supporting engaging programs for children and families, providing excellent customer service, and collaborating with a dynamic team of librarians across departments. The library’s current children’s programming focuses on art, music, storytime, and gaming. Derby Neck Library welcomes candidates who bring their own unique interests and perspectives to help meet the diverse needs of its vibrant community of young knowledge seekers, readers, and tinkerers.
This position requires substantial patron interaction, including circulation desk coverage and readers’ advisory. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates with a demonstrated history of program and event development and promotion are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience with social media, newsletters, digital content creation, and graphic design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Illustrator) is highly desirable.
Hours: Part-time 20-24 hours per week, including early evenings and rotating weekends
Compensation: Hourly rate of $17.50/hr; simple IRA retirement plan with employer-matching contributions up to 3%; sick and personal PTO; and tuition reimbursement.
Job Summary:
The Children’s Services Assistant is responsible for assisting the Children’s Services Librarian with daily operations, including circulation duties and maintaining a clean, engaging, and welcoming atmosphere in our busy Children’s Department. Additionally, the Children’s Services Assistant will assist with cataloging, programming, outreach, and other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
Reports to the Head Librarian/Director and Children’s Services Librarian.
Works under the immediate supervision of the Children’s Services Librarian.
Essential Job Functions:
1) Assists in the development and implementation of library programs, special events and Summer Reading
2) Promotes library events via the library’s website, flyers, social media, email, newsletter, print, TV, and radio marketing and coordinates event registrations when
necessary
3) Assists in selecting and processing print and electronic materials
4) Straightens shelves and maintains book/material displays
5) Builds and maintains a strong working knowledge of the circulation system
6) Builds and maintains a strong working knowledge of current and emerging technologies
7) Works Circulation Desk shifts as scheduled, including responding to patron requests, answering phone, coordinating event and newsletter registrations, etc.
8) Deals tactfully and courteously with the public and upholds all confidentiality rights of patrons and patron records
9) Performs other duties as assigned
10) Displays professional conduct and appearance at all times while performing duties.
Qualifications and Requirements:
1) High School Diploma or GED required
2) A passion for working with and serving children and families
3) Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly and responsive manner
4) A strong background with print and non-print media
5) A familiarity with current and emerging technologies, particularly Google Suite, Canva, social media, and mobile devices
6) Patience, tact, and excellent communication skills
7) Maintains a cooperative team spirit.
Preferred:
1) Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to education/childhood development
2) Knowledge of library best practices and/or experience working in public libraries
3) Experience creating and conducting programs and/or fostering community engagement with children in mind
4) A love for creativity and play
5) Bilingual language skills desirable.
Abilities:
1) Ability to continuously bend, twist, stoop, reach and pull
2) Ability to keep composure in everyday, potentially stressful situations
3) Ability to meet a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends
4) Lifting of moderate to heavy weight material up to 30 lbs.
Circulation Staff (Library Assistant Level I, 3 positions)
Derby Neck Library is seeking applicants for three entry-level circulation staff positions. These positions require substantial patron interaction and customer service. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to think on your feet. A flexible schedule is highly desirable.
Hours: Part-time 12-20 hours per week including evenings and rotating weekends
Compensation: Hourly rate of $16.94/hr; simple IRA retirement plan with employer-matching contributions up to 3%; sick and personal PTO; and tuition reimbursement.
Job Summary:
Circulation staff members are responsible for circulation duties including, but not limited to material check in/check out, answering phones, shelving, responding to patron requests/questions, and assisting professional staff as needed.
Supervision Received:
Reports to the Head Librarian/Director and the Tech Services Librarian.
Works under the immediate supervision of the Tech Services Librarian.
Essential Job Functions:
1) Builds and maintains a strong working knowledge of the circulation system
2) Builds and maintains a strong working knowledge of current and emerging technologies
3) Works Circulation Desk shifts as scheduled, including responding to patron requests, answering phone, coordinating event and newsletter registrations, etc.
4) Processes material returns and checkouts, shelving when necessary
5) Straightens shelves in the New section, rotating books on display
6) Processes inter-library loan requests from other libraries
7) Ensures patrons are well-informed of library services, programming, policies, and procedures
8) Deals tactfully and courteously with the public and upholds all confidentiality rights of patrons and patron records
9) Performs other duties as assigned by the Technical Services Librarian and the Head Librarian/Director
10) Displays professional conduct and appearance at all times while performing duties.

Volunteering is great way to get active in your community. At Derby Neck Library, we offer a host of options for volunteers who are looking to get valuable work experience, fulfill community service hours (school, church, court, etc.) or just want to get involved. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. No previous experience is required.
