Computer Use Policy
- All patrons must register at the Circulation Desk in order to use a desktop computer.
- The computers located in the computer lab are reserved for adults over the age of 18.
- Adults without children will not be assigned computers in the Children’s Room or the Teen Space under any circumstances.
- In keeping with the age restrictions on the Reading Room, only adults over the age of 18 may use those computers.
The Library affirms and acknowledges the rights and responsibilities of parents and caregivers to monitor and determine their children’s access to library materials and resources, including those available through the Internet. As such, parents or caregivers are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children while utilizing the computers at the Derby Neck Library. Children, defined as individuals under 18 years of age by Connecticut State Statute, who use the Internet unsupervised may be exposed to information and images considered inappropriate or disturbing. Parents are encouraged to discuss the use of the Internet in relation to family values and boundaries with their children and teens.
Patrons are allowed to use a computer for however long they need provided that computers remain available for others to use. In the event that all computers are in use and another patron is in need, patrons will be asked to discontinue using computers on a first on first off basis. One hour of usage is guaranteed unless limited by operating hours.
While the Derby Neck Library fully endorses the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights and commitment to intellectual freedom, this endorsement does not imply a lack of consequences for patrons who do not engage with content responsibly while in a public space. Any use of computers to access inappropriate content as determined by library staff constitutes cause for immediate cessation of computer use and dismissal from the building and grounds for the day. A second offense will result in a ban from Library premises for one calendar year.
