SUMMARY:Monday Movie Matinee - SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (1941)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we watch perhaps the greatest comedy of all time: Su
llivan’s Travels (1941) by Preston Sturges. Joel McCrea plays a director
of Hollywood trifles who yearns to make a serious ode to the working clas
s (called O Brother\, Where Art Thou?)\, but lacks any firsthand experienc
e of poverty. He decides to don the rags of a tramp and take to the road\,
where he meets a down-on-her-luck actress played by the iconic Veronica L
ake. Hilarity ensues. But (like that other great comedy\, Groundhog Day) S
ullivan’s Travels is also a masterful spiritual allegory\, paralleling t
he life of the Buddha and the gnostic “Hymn of the Pearl” while demons
trating the transcendent mystical power of cinema. Hot\, fresh popcorn wil
 l be served!
