Rules for the Readathon

Prizes are divided into 4 tiers and each has its own requirement. With each submission, you gain points that unlock fantastic prizes at higher and higher tiers (4 total) as well as entries for the summer grand prize sweepstakes (1 for Tier 1, 2 for Tier 2, and so on)! The date in parentheses is when the tier unlocks.

Tier 1 (Jun 23):20 pts. – Read 200 pages

Tier 2 (Jul 7):   30 pts. – Read 300 pages

Tier 3 (Jul 21):             40 pts. – Read 400 pages

Tier 4 (Aug 4):             50 pts. – Read 500 pages

Total pages required for all 4 tiers: 1400.

Additionally, each program you participate in is worth 10 points up to a maximum 30 points! In order to earn your 10 points, you must attend a program from start to finish.

You may submit for any unlocked tier until the August 20 deadline, but only 1 submission per tier. See the glass case near the Library Circulation Desk for the choice of prizes. If you write a sentence or two about what you read, you will receive a $2 ice cream coupon or a $2 forgive me coupon IN ADDITION to your points.

Rules for the Photo Scavenger Hunt

Derby has a lot of unique plants. How many can you find? You have until August 20 to find as many unique Derby plants as possible and take a photo of each. The teen/tween who submits the most will win the grand prize, but ALL SUBMITTERS will win a prize and 2 Sweepstakes Entries!

All photos should be taken as close as possible without touching the plants themselves. Please remember that poisonous plants are common, such as poison ivy, oak, and sumac. Other plants can have sharp thorns. As such, there is no need to touch the plants. Simply “collect” them with your camera or smartphone.

In the case of larger plants, such as trees and bushes, take the picture from far enough away to capture most of the plant, but close enough to distinguish it from others. Taking 1 picture of a forest and saying “Look at all the unique plants in this one” just won’t cut it. 1 focus plant per picture.

When you are ready to submit, you have a couple options: put all your photos on a flash drive with your name on it; print them out and make an album; put them on Instagram or another photo sharing site and email a link to headlibrarian@biblio.org. If you have another idea, let Ian, the head librarian, know.
